There are four levels crimes in Minnesota, they are: Petty Misdemeanor, Misdemeanor, Gross Misdemeanor and Felony. Their definitions are as follows:
- Petty Misdemeanor - is a noncriminal offense punishable by a maximum $300.00 fine. You cannot go to jail for a petty misdemeanor.
- Misdemeanor - is punishable by up to 90 days in jail, and/or a $1,000.00 fine.
- Gross Misdemeanor - is punishable by up to one year in jail, and/or a $3,000.00 fine.
- Felony - is punishable by over one year in jail and/or more than a $3,000.00 fine.
